Has slowdown really hit the media industry??

News X sold out and NDTV Media's open letter in exchange4media this morning about taking a serious look on the economic meltdown in the industry impacting its organisation and necessary actions to be taken to cut flab and be a lean and mean company with also "compassionate" added in, UTV earlier taking similar kind of stance, gives reason for serious thoughts for media professionals like us.

We need to introspect immediately if this meltdown is so bad! Only last year all organisations were showing record increase in their revenues. A bit of a downslide prompts all of them to immediately put a freeze on recruitments, force pay cuts, cutting flab etc, all talks about showing that only having and paying for good people is the whole problem! Is it?

They need to start off somewhere thats all! All else which actually needs trimming is forgotten. Companies launched channels left, right and centre when the going was good. It was a great strategy, everyone claimed. We will have channels in every niche, because, tomorrow advertisers will look at specialised channels for a particular segment and will pour money into it. This gave way to more investments in everything. But today, when the going gets tough, it all falls back to square one.

These are hard times. But, everytime it comes to bottom, we can always look forward for something only better to happen soon. This meltdown I personally feel, is just letting cats out of the bags. Its just taking blame for many inaccurate strategies done by the media companies in India till now. Everything and everyone is blaming the economic meltdown for its or his/her problems.

Well, it is here to stay for some time only. After the financials are announced in march, and by august, we feel that the markets are going to improve and everything will again fall into place and every other organisation will start becoming aggressive in their plans.

Here's hoping for the future...

The First Post!!!

HONESTLY! I dont know what I should post! But, hey, you need to start somewhere, right? Hope that this initiative will benefit each and everyone who has made this very exciting and glamorous ( If I can say that) industry their livelihood.

Let me start about myselft first. 1992, My entry into this industry was, not an accident really, it was a pre-decided decision my dad had for me. You know, or rather dont know till now, that my family is closely related to the owners of the top Newspaper group in Karnataka, The Printers (Mysore) Ltd, publishers of Deccan Herald, the english Daily, Prajavani, the kannada vernacular and these were the leaders in the segment at that time. Right after college, my dad went and spoke to somebody there and then came back and told me that I had to meet somebody in the DH office in M.G. Road, Bangalore. The rest is as some of you and many of my close friends know is history. That I feel very lucky to be part of this great industry is in itself a great high!

Well, this is not a autobiographical blog. There's time for that too, maybe, much later in my life!

This blog was created with the intention of bringing together a community which thrives on networking. This blog should was created so that many individuals who are part of this industry and would want to become part of this excitement, benefit out of the experiences that people like me have had here and which in turn has made everything that we want possible.

I would require suggestions from my esteemed colleagues in this industry on how to make this a greater place. Maybe we can add day to day happenings in the media industry, something like the everyday MIS we have in our daily lives as working professionals. Just a suggestion, but something we can look forward to everyday.

Welcome people!!! start off!!!!
